Where the lagoon meets the sea, 78 giant, inflatable walls protect Venice from storm surges and catastrophic flooding. After nearly 50 years of design and construction, these walls came online in 2021, and already the rate of sea-level rise from climate change is outpacing what the walls were built to withstand.
In the very near future, Venice will be facing impossible trade offs between needing to cut itself off from the waters that are its lifeblood, or to protect everything else along its shores.
All paintings in this Collection come with a handcrafted wooden frame, made locally using poplar wood and given a clear varnish for a natural finish.
